Top seed Justine Henin made an impressive start to her bid for a second US Open title as she beat German qualifier Julia Goerges 6-0 6-3 on Monday.
The world number one, the winner in 2003 and runner-up to Russian Maria Sharapova last year, won through in just 62 minutes.
World number 145 Goerges, who was making her grand-slam debut, fought hard in the second set but Henin broke twice to advance, clinching victory with a winning backhand return.
Henin will now play another qualifier, Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, or Russian Olga Poutchkova in the second round.
