Indian men’s and women's teams are through to quarterfinals of the Paris Games

Making a sensational debut for India at the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris on Thursday, Indian top-seed Dhiraj Bommadevara finished fourth in the men’s archery ranking round. Dhiraj bagged 681 points while his compatriot Tarundeep Rai finished with 764 points to take the 14th spot in the final standings. Pravin Jadhav had a forgetful outing as the Indian archer settled for the 39th spot with 658 points. The troika of Dhiraj, Rai and Jadhav powered India to the third spot with a combined tally of 2013 points. Lim shoots world record

Earlier in the day, Ankita Bhakat guided India to the women’s quarter-finals as the top-seeded Indian archer recorded her season-best of 666 points to seal the 11th spot in the archery rankings series at the Paris Games 2024. Ankita's teammates Bhajan Kaur and Deepika Kumari finished in 22nd and 23rd places while Korea’s Sihyeon Lim smashed the world record with a score of 694.

The opening ceremony is set to be held tomorrow but the Indian archers had the country's campaign underway at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After the women's event, the men's individual ranking round took place as all six of India's archers were hoping to secure favourable seedings. It is the first time since London 2012 that Indian archers have been able to claim all six of the available quota places. With men's and women's teams entering the quarter-finals, Indian archers can end the nation's perplexing duck of Olympic medals at the Paris Games.

Archery will go on till August 4 at the Paris Games. The women's ranking round was held first today from 1 pm IST. Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Bhajan Kaur were in action for India. The men's round started at 6:10 pm IST, with veteran Tarundeep, Pravin and Dhiraj representing India in the field.
