Sania Mirza went down fighting in the first round of the $220,000 AEGON Classic tennis tournament. Sania lost 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Tamira Paszek of Austria in the grasscourt event Tuesday.
The tournament is the first of the two warm-up tournaments on grass ahead of the All England Championships at Wimbledon, beginning June 20.
Indo-Pak Express make semis
Indian Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi rallied from a set down to advance to the semifinals of Gerry Weber Open with a 4-6 7-6 (5) 10-4 victory over Dustin Brown of Germany and France's Gael Monfils at Halle, Germany Wednesday.
The "Indo-Pak Express", top seed in the Euro 7,50,000 grass court tournament, was taken by surprise by its unseeded opponents who broke Bopanna and Qureshi once to run away with the first set comfortably.
However, Bopanna and Qureshi managed to get their act together and bounced back in the second set before wrapping the match in the deciding third set.
In the semifinals, Bopanna and Qureshi will take on winners of the match between the German combo of Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber and Finland's Jarkko Nieminen and Viktor Troicki of Serbia
Hewitt moves up
Defending champion Lleyton Hewitt had few problems booking his place in the second round at Halle's ATP grasscourt tournament with an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over lucky loser Leonardo Mayer on Wednesday.
Hewitt had been due to face French Open finalist Roger Federer in the first-round match — a repeat of last year's final — but the Swiss star's withdrawal on Monday saw Mayer promoted to the main draw.
