Adding a soundbar is one of the easiest ways to enhance the overall sound quality of a TV. However, buying a soundbar for a TV can quickly get confusing, especially when you are presented with 2.1, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos soundbars as options. The question remains, which one of these actually makes the biggest difference and is it worth paying more for?

I compared these three popular soundbar configurations to understand what you really get for your money. Let me break it down for you. But before that, here's a quick comparison for your reference.

2.1 channel vs 5.1 channel vs Dolby Atmos soundbars: What's different?

What is a 2.1-channel soundbar?

A 2.1-channel soundbar typically pairs a left and right channel with a dedicated subwoofer, which makes it a simple option for better TV sound and punchier bass. These left and right speakers give users a stereo sound experience. However, they fail to deliver a more wholistic surround sound experience. The benefit of using a 2.1-channel soundbar is that it takes very little space and is easier to setup. It also costs a lot less than other setups. As mentioned before, This setup doesn't provide any real surround sound as it lacks rear speakers. That said, such a set is ideal for small to medium-sized rooms.

What is a 5.1-channel soundbar?

A 5.1-channel system, on the other hand, adds dedicated surround channels, which creates a wider and more immersive experience, especially for movies and gaming. It uses five separate audio channels and one subwoofer channel for deep bass. This setup splits sounds across multiple directions to make movies and games feel more immersive. Needless to say that a 5.1-channel soundbar creates a surround sound experience. Such a setup also provides a deeper bass. However, it is more expensive than a 2.1-channel system. In addition to this, there is also the added hassle of wires running across the room or dealing with separate power connections for wireless rear speakers. Apart from this, 5.1-channel soundbars rely on wall reflections to mimic rear speakers, which fails in open-concept or irregular rooms.

What is a Dolby Atmos soundbar?

Then there are Dolby Atmos soundbars use additional speakers, including upward-firing drivers or virtual processing to create a more three-dimensional soundstage. These soundbars include an all-in-one or modular speaker system that processes object-based audio, which in turn projects sound not only horizontally around you, but also vertically. This, in turn, makes audio effects like rain or helicopters sound like they are coming from directly overhead. The benefit of having a Dolby Atmos soundbar is that it provides an immersive 3D sound experience along with space saving design and compatibility with modern spatial audio mixes. However, Dolby Atmos speakers are space dependent and they also are pricier than regular soundbars.

5 things you should check before buying a home theatre system for your living room

The Research

I’ve used and tested hundreds of soundbars across price points and types. I’ve also been writing about consumer electronic devices and home appliances for over a decade.

To compile this guide, I’ve used at least a dozen soundbars with various channel configurations and combed through Reddit pages that talk about their audio technology, drivers, and factors that impact their overall performance. Like all HT journalists, I review products with complete editorial independence and recommend products based on my learnings.

FAQs for buying a soundbar in India
Your budget should depend on what you want from the system. Under ₹15,000, there are already 2.1 and 5.1 options with Dolby support, Bluetooth and HDMI connectivity. Moving into higher price brackets can get you better Atmos implementations, wireless rear speakers, eARC, Wi-Fi and more advanced room calibration.
No. Wattage should not be the deciding factor by itself. A high-wattage soundbar may be unnecessarily powerful for a small room, while speaker configuration, tuning, subwoofer quality and audio processing can have a greater impact on the listening experience.
If you want a more immersive home-theatre experience, both are worth considering.
For a smaller room, a compact 2.0 or 2.1 soundbar can be enough.
HDMI ARC/eARC is generally the best choice for connecting a soundbar to a modern TV, because it can carry TV audio and allows convenient control through compatible HDMI-CEC systems.
