Centre approves Rs4,381 cr additional aid to 6 states hit by cyclones, floods

A day after his visit to the Amphan-hit states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on May 23 announced assistance of Rs 1,000 crore to West Bengal and Rs 500 crore to Odisha which was released for immediate relief activities, the Centre said.

Pune gets its normal rainfall quota of June in just 20 days

“There are three reasons due to which Pune has received more than normal rainfall in just 20 days, that is cyclonic rains due to Nisarga, good moisture incursion and normal onset of monsoon,” said Anupam Kashyapi, IMD director.

Cyclone Nisarga: Maharashtra govt announces compensation to affected people in Konkan

“Assessment of damages due to Cyclone Nisarga was done, there was a lot of damage. To help people of Konkan, every family there will be given Rs 5000 each for purchasing clothes and essentials, those whose houses in slums were damaged will be given Rs 15,000 each,’’ Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said.

One structure – a government building made of concrete – survived high speed winds, while the other that did not sustain any damage was a house which had four layers of tin, making it difficult for the combined sheets to fly off.

Meteorological officials said they were expecting more rain, including some heavy showers, since Mumbai was witnessing a combination of the post-cyclone effect and monsoon winds over the west coast.

Large parts of Raigad district were devastated on Wednesday afternoon after cyclone Nisarga made landfall. Trees and electric poles were uprooted, communication lines snapped and damages caused to thatched and kutcha houses.
