According to a survey carried out in 15 countries by momondo.fr, a travel metasearch engine, and contrary to popular belief, tourists of all nationalities have the same criteria for selecting a hotel. The sole exception: the Chinese.
When tourists set out to find the best hotel for their next holiday, almost all of them agree on the need to find the best price.
Of course, certain nationalities prove thriftier than others: for example, Norwegians are the most likely (68%) to search for the lowest rate. Americans (66%), Swedes (66%) and the Portuguese (66%) all listed ahead of the French, who though often stereotyped as stingy only came in at 57%.
The second most important criterion for tourists was to find a hotel near the sites they planned to visit. Norwegians, once again, proved that it was a major factor in their decision making (58%), as did the Danes (54%), the Spanish (53%) and the Swedish (53%).
The Chinese exception
Only one country, China, defied the trends in this survey. Tourists from China do not have the same requirements as everyone else. In fact, the price of a hotel only rates third on their list of criteria (39%). The Chinese would rather have an ideally located hotel (45%) or one situated in a locale of irrefutable charm (44%).
This survey was carried out by Radius Kommunikation for Momondo and polled the travel habits of people from 15 countries: China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the USA. The online survey polled at least 1,000 people aged 18-65 from each country between January 12-25, 2015.
