The unchallenged voice of a zillion hit item songs of 1960s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, Asha Bhosle, at 79, returns to TV. The singer will be the Indian member of the jury on Sahara One’s upcoming music reality show Sur-kshetra that pits Indian singers against Pakistanis. Composer-singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya and pop singer Atif Aslam will be heading the respective teams of six singers picked out of auditions conducted in six cities across India and Pakistan.
On last check, Asha, accompanied by her son Anand Bhosle, had reached Dubai to report on the sets along with the show’s mentors and producer Gajendra Singh. The National Award winning singer’s decision to take up the reality show comes days after she won the Life Time Achievement Award at the Colors Screen Awards.
“I will be going off to Dubai to shoot,” she had said, when asked what her plans for the first couple of months in the year were. “I don’t want to disclose too many details right now. But it’s a big project.”
The singer will also be touring Hong Kong for a concert next month. “It’s a massive show. I don’t know if a world tour is possible at this point, but a couple of shows like these can always be accommodated,” beams Asha, who has earlier appeared on reality shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV and never quite appreciated the concept of newbies performing to the tracks of popular singers.
The playback singer was also expected to make her acting debut with Maee where she plays the title role almost six months ago. Bring this up and Asha smiles, “The wait is over. My film will release in about 45 days from now. And trust me, I’m all charged up to act and sing. I’ll also be releasing my large-scale private album soon.”
Abida Parveen as co-jury?
Asha Bhosle is not the only judge on the music reality show. Her Pakistani counterpart is likely to be ghazal singer Abida Parveen. She recently signed on the dotted line for the show and is supposedly in Dubai for the show’s shoot. Singer Runa Laila is also expected to be part of the jury, and will comprise two or three other singers or composers in the capacity of rotating judges.
