Khichdi — The Movie

set to hit theatres next month, Indian fans will see a TV show being adapted to the big screen for the first time.

“I see this as a huge trend,” says JD Majethia, actor and producer of

Khichdi

. “The characters from the show have been retained, but we have packaged them as movie stars. My character Himanshu sings and dances now, like any Bollywood actor. Even his appearance is more polished,” he says.

His views are shared by Aatish Kapadia, who has written and directed the TV series, and will also helm the film. “

Khichdi

could easily have returned for another season on TV, but that wouldn’t have been a challenge. Making a feature film gives us a chance to tell a new story with the same characters that became larger than life with the show,” he says.

Kapadia sees scope for most Indian TV shows to be presented in the longer format. “

Karamchand

is one such show,” he says, “Even

Wagle Ki Duniya

would be interesting to watch. Among the newer shows,

Baa Bahu Aur Baby

would make for a very funny movie.”
