It’s official! Preity Zinta’s Guinness World Record – Ab India Todega on Colors, is the new No 7 on the chart of celebrity-driven reality shows on Hindi GECs. According to the data issued by TAM India, the official TRP record keeper, the actor’s show that opened with 3.3 points last Friday, has pushed Shah Rukh Khan’s Zor Ka Jhatka on Imagine, and Akshay Kumar’s MasterChef India on Star Plus, further down to No 8 and 9 with 2.6 points each in the opening episodes, respectively.
Amitabh Bachchan continues to be on the top spot with 6.2 points for the fourth edition of KBC on Sony Entertainment, followed by Madhuri Dixit with 5.6 points on Jhalak Dikkhlaa Jaa 4, on the same channel.
Priyanka Chopra’s Khatron Ke Khiladi and Abhishek Bachchan’s National Bingo Night (both on Colors) are on No 3 and 4 spots with 5.5 and 5.1 points. Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss 4 and Mithun Chakraborthy’s DID Doubles (Colors and Zee TV respectively) occupy the No 5 and 6 spots.
Ashvini Yardi, head of programming, Colors, without commenting on the ratings, beams, “It’s an encouraging number because we’re up against the cricket World Cup. Preity’s presence has made a lot of difference. We now have to sustain the momentum through the remaining matches and then, the Indian Premier League (IPL).”
Producer Niret Alva from Miditech seconds Yardi, but points out that cricket matches on weekdays and weekends receive double-digit ratings. “It takes a lot of courage to launch a big show in the midst of such competition,” he says. “We still have the IPL matches to go. However, I’m relieved and I’m sure we’ll sail through.”
Host Preity Zinta believes that it’s only the first and last 30 minutes of a cricket match that make the difference to a viewer at home. “With due respect to the game and its followers, you have to be out of work to spend eight hours everyday for two months to watch the World Cup,” she says. “I watch a match for the first and last 30 minutes, regardless of which teams are playing. So, as entertainers, we need to stop believing that we’re the best judges of what works for the audience. I’m not boasting, but the figures speak for themselves.”

Television Rating Points indicate the popularity of a channel or show. TAM India is the only electronic rating agency in India as of now. It uses frequency monitoring with people meters and picture matching. Currently, TRP is based on a small urban sample size of 5,500 homes spread all over India.
