From being a stand-up comic to having his own show on TV, Kapil Sharma’s meteoric rise in the entertainment industry is hard to ignore. Through his popular comedy series, the 34-year-old not only became a household name, but also made connections in the Bollywood circuit. So much so that he was offered a lead role in director duo Abbas-Mustan’s film. Owing to his popularity, his name was featured in the Forbes India Celebrity list, and he was also nominated for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by PM Narendra Modi.

However, achieving what he has in the past few years wasn’t a cakewalk for Kapil. The actor-comedian hails from a humble background, and struggled doing theatre for 10 years. Things changed for him in 2007, after he was adjudged the winner of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. This win became a platform for him to bag more projects, till be launched his own comedy show, which became an instant hit.

Kapil says that his popularity is a result of 15 years of hard work. “The success of the show wasn’t overnight. I honed my skills, and got enough experience to know what would work. My show is popular, as we don’t have below-the-belt humour, which is the easiest thing to do. People trust us to have clean jokes that a family audience would enjoy without causing embarrassment. The audience relates to our jokes, and my team works really hard to deliver quality content every week.”
