Analogue paneer is a non-dairy product made using ingredients such as vegetable oils, starches, emulsifiers and other additives instead of milk. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has proposed banning the manufacture and sale of such products being marketed as paneer, citing consumer protection. A commonly discussed iodine or Betadine test may indicate the presence of starch, but it is not a definitive way to determine whether paneer is genuine. Laboratory testing is required for confirmation. Several Indian states have already taken action against analogue paneer, while Zomato has also restricted restaurants from selling dishes containing analogue dairy products.
