The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet cleared an ordinance to penalise 'unlawful' religious conversion, days after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promised a law against 'love jihad' - a conspiracy to convert Hindu women, as alleged by some Hindutva groups. The Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Ordinance 2020 has various provisions to punish those who indulge in religious conversion by means such as misrepresentation or coercion.
