Pakistan has made way for the import of 500,000 short staple cotton bales from India to make up for a deficit in its domestic production. The decision was made in a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), in Islamabad under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mohammedan Somroo. According to the special secretary Ashfaq Hassan of the Pakistan finance ministry, Pakistan's cotton mills have the capacity to handle 16 million bales per annum, while the total cotton production in the country is about 12 to 13 million bales.
