Buddhist art institute in Sikkim endeavours to preserve the Tibetan scroll-banner painting art, Thangka, by imparting training to young monks. The Buddhist Tibetan pantheon is very complex. Thangkas are the expression of this pantheon and they reflect its complexity by an extremely varied iconography. Thangka paintings, the oldest form of traditional and religious painting of Sikkim, are generally made on cotton canvas with vegetable dyes as colors.
