Firefighters in northeastern Spain are battling a major wildfire in Huesca province as flames threaten the historic monasteries of San Juan de la Peña. Helicopter footage filmed on Thursday showed flames sweeping through forested hillsides towards the monastery complex, while thick smoke covered the surrounding landscape.
The wildfire has already scorched more than 9,000 hectares, with difficult terrain, shifting winds and repeated flare-ups making firefighting operations challenging. Around 500 firefighters and emergency personnel, supported by approximately 30 aircraft, are reportedly working to contain the blaze along a perimeter stretching nearly 60 kilometres.
