Putin Faces Fresh Infighting Challenge; Wagner Chief Shrugs Off Russian Military Contract Order

A full-blown war has erupted between the Wagner boss and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has brushed off the Russian order to sign contracts with the defence ministry and said that "the group will not sign any contracts with Shoigu.'' Prigozhin stated that the Wagner Group is well integrated with the Russian military, but its effectiveness would be damaged by having to report to Sergei Shoigu. This comes after the Russian Defence Minister's directive to all "volunteer detachments" to sign contracts with Moscow's military by the end of June. Shoigu's decision to take control over Wagner is aimed at "ending infighting." However, the order has fanned the tensions even further amid an intense war with Ukraine.
