Sporty hijabs make field of sports more welcoming
A high school tennis team in Maine raised money privately to purchase sport hijabs for Muslim girls who play sports. It’s believed to be the first time a U.S. high school has begun providing hijabs to student-athletes. The school’s athletic director says she believes that it will encourage more Muslim girls to play sports. Sports hijabs have gotten more attention, of late. Seizing on a new market, Nike has announced that it will make its own version available next year. FIFA and FIBA -- the international federations for soccer and basketball -- both recently lifted bans on the hijab.
