Taiwan has launched its biggest military reserve reform in decades as tensions with China continue to rise. The island has doubled mandatory reservist training from up to seven days to 14 days, introducing drone operations, U.S.-made HIMARS rocket systems, live-fire drills, battlefield first aid, camouflage exercises, and overnight deployments. The reforms aim to improve combat readiness while addressing a growing shortage of military-age recruits. Officials also plan to expand the reserve force by including retired female volunteers. Analysts say the overhaul reflects lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, but caution that longer training alone may not solve Taiwan's long-term manpower challenges.
