A major diplomatic dispute has erupted between Poland and Ukraine after Polish President Karol Nawrocki revoked one of Poland’s highest state honours previously awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The decision followed Kyiv’s move to honour a military unit linked to traditions associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group viewed very differently in the two countries. Poland regards the UPA as responsible for mass killings of Poles during World War II, while many Ukrainians see it as part of the struggle against Soviet rule. The controversy has reignited historical tensions despite ongoing cooperation against Russian aggression.
