Bangladesh lifts two-year state of emergency

Bangladesh lifted a two-year-old state of emergency on Wednesday, ahead of a parliamentary election on December 29. The move will allow political parties to campaign freely ending two years of rule by a military-backed interim authority. The authority took power amidst violence and political turmoil in January 2007. Residents in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, welcomed the move.
