Singh — the first minority community politician to lead a federal party in Canada — proposed to Kaur, 27, at a private party on Tuesday. CBC reported he surprised Kaur by popping the question in front of family and friends at a restaurant where they had their first date.

“She said yes,” the 38-year-old tweeted, sharing two photos of him and his fiancée.

Singh has previously been very guarded about his personal life, and until December, he had declined to confirm or deny that he was in a relationship.

The Toronto Star reported that when Singh was asked why had he decided to make this news public, he said he was excited about the engagement. “I’m super excited to take this step forward — to have a life and future together with my partner,” he was quoted as saying by the Star.

Singh is a popular politician in Canada. He took the reins of the NDP in October, and a December survey released by the public policy research group Angus Reid Institute showed that he had a 39% approval rating — an impressive showing on his debut on the list.

The NDP is one of the three largest political parties in Canada.
