A Chinese construction worker has miraculously survived after falling on a two-metre rod, which impaled his body from his groin to torso, reports have said.

The 37-year-old man was working on a construction site in Chengdu city when he was struck by lightning, causing him to fall on the rod on September 18.

Doctors at West China Medical Centre of Sichuan University successfully removed the rod in a seven-hour surgery on September 19, The Daily Mail reported. A statement on the hospital’s Weibo account confirmed the success of the operation.

“The patient is very, very lucky. The rod did not damage any of his vital organs... There is no significant blood loss and his blood circulation system appears to be fine,” Dr Ma Lin, one of the experts who performed the surgery, said.

“The rod is speared through the space between his bladder and intestines. To my surprise, the rod did not damage any major arteries of his abdomen,” Dr Ma added.
