New York mayor election: Democrat Zohran Mamdani won New York City's mayoral election, defeating Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. But hours later, he was called a ‘terrorist’ by a conservative radio host, who vowed to make him “miserable”. The 34-year-old Indian-origin Democratic Socialist has become the city's first Muslim mayor, as well as the youngest in over a century. He will replace Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his reelection bid in September but remained on the ballot.

A moment that has gone viral on social media shows the hit Hindi song ‘Dhoom Machale’ playing in the background as Mamdani ends his speech and the crowd erupts in applause.

In his victory speech, Mamdani said his victory helped topple a ‘political dynasty’ as he quoted the words of former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that ‘a moment comes, but rarely in history’.

His speech also sharply targeted Trump, who had warned of cutting off funds to New York if Mamdani wins. The mayor-elect vowed to end the culture of corruption and accused Trump of exploiting tax loopholes as well as evading his fair share of taxes.

"Donald Trump, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” he said, referencing Trump’s repeated threats and criticisms during the campaign. His attacks towards Trump were met with massive applause from the audience.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, Democrat Abigail Spanberger easily won the election for governor, becoming the first woman elected to serve in that role. And in New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the governor's race.

The trio of races offered the Democratic Party a test of differing campaign playbooks a year ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, when control of Congress will be at stake. Since Donald Trump's win last year, Democrats have found themselves locked out of power in Washington and struggling to find the best path out of the political wilderness.
