SCO Summit 2025 highlights: Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to India on Monday after concluding his visits to Japan and China. PM Modi landed in Japan on August 29 for a two-day visit, wherein he participated in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. The Prime Minister thereafter visited China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin.

Day 2 of the SCO Summit 2025 in China's Tianjin kicked off on Monday with powerful displays of bonhomie among global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China and Russia Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, and strong messages sent out from their addresses.

PM Modi addressed the plenary session, touching on various subjects like cooperation and terrorism.

Summit Background

• The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit 2025 brings together major Eurasian leaders in Tianjin, China, with regional security, trade, and geopolitical alignments topping the agenda.
• This summit is especially significant amid ongoing global shifts, including US-China relations and heightened energy and trade discussions.

India-China Relations

• PM Modi was in Tianjin, marking his first visit to China in seven years.
• On the eve of the summit, Modi held a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping, focusing on improving ties through mutual trust and respect, and emphasising the need for border peace.
• This meeting builds on their previous encounter at the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan.

India-Russia Cooperation

PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and trade, defence, and energy issues will be on the agenda.

• The two leaders discussed strengthening their partnership, recent global pressures over India’s Russian oil purchases, and Putin’s expected visit to India later this year
