Seven vehicles, including six trucks and one minibus, were also destroyed during the accident, Xinhua news agency quoted a local official as saying.

"Vehicles plunged into the Minjiang River when huge rocks washed off from a nearby mountain by continuous heavy rains hit and broke a bridge pier at 5 am (local time), destroying the Chediguan Bridge which they were riding on," the official said.

The Chediguan Bridge is regarded as the lifeline for the reconstruction of Wenchuan, the epicenter of devastating earthquake which had rocked the Communist nation last year.
