6.0 quake off Russia's far-east Kamchatka coastline

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula early today, the US Geological Survey reported, striking at a depth of 33km (20 miles).

The quake hit at 0155 GMT, 136km east-southeast of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the USGS reported.

It said there was a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

The Kamchatka peninsula is where the Pacific tectonic plate meets part of the North American, making the region one of the most seismically active in the world.
