Afghan opium production falls sharply: UN

Afghan poppy cultivation increased this year but potential opium production fell 36% because of plant diseases and bad weather in the world's biggest producer, the United Nations said today.

Afghan poppy cultivation increased this year but potential opium production fell 36% because of plant diseases and bad weather in the world's biggest producer, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

The area under opium poppies rose by 18% despite increased eradication efforts by the Western-backed government, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said in its annual report.
