Not everything India whispers into President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ears would probably be music to him.
But Rajapaksa wouldn’t have been complaining on Tuesday evening when legend Asha Bhosle sang for him at his official residence, Temple Trees.
Bhosle is currently in Colombo to record a song with a popular music duo.
Apparently, when the news of the Indian legend’s visit to Colombo reached Shiranthi Rajapaksa, the first lady, she sent out a personal invitation to her to visit their home.
During her Tuesday evening visit, Bhosle interacted with the first couple and a handful of close friends invited to take part in the gathering and interact with the Indian singer.
“She is a very nice lady. She was talking very nicely and seemed very learned,’’ Bhosle told HT during a brief conversation.
Bhosle said she could not say no when the first couple and the rest of the guests requested a song. “I am a singer,’’ she said.
Bhosle then sat with the President and sang one of her popular numbers Churaliya hai from the 1973 movie Yadon ki Baraat. The request for the song came from the first lady.
Colombo of course has had Mohammad Rafi performing on the Galle Face Green beach front in May 1980 to a record audience. Rafi was specially invited by President JR Jayawardene to take part in a concert to celebrate May Day.
