The bus was carrying about 25 people from the Atlantic port city of Puerto Barrios and bound for Chiquimula when it crashed with a truck bearing Salvadoran license plates, a member of the fire department told AFP.

Both drivers fled the scene in the town of Gualan, while the fate of the others involved in the crash was not immediately clear.

Guatemala's heavily traveled Highway C9 is the scene of numerous fatal accidents.
