"Five people were killed including one police officer and more than 20 people were injured," senior police official Imran Kishwar told AFP.

"It was a bomb blast -- we are investigating the possibility that it was a suicide attack."

Another police official, Abdul Majid, confirmed the bombing at the market, adding that "there are several people killed and wounded". The exact target of the bombing was unclear.

Hours earlier a bomb planted outside a school killed an eight-year-old boy in the city, police and hospital officials said.
