The British government on Tuesday overturned a ban on London Metropolitan University (LMU) admitting students from outside the European Union, eight months after withdrawing its sponsorship licence.
The British government on Tuesday overturned a ban on London Metropolitan University (LMU) admitting students from outside the European Union, eight months after withdrawing its sponsorship licence.
The UK Border Agency's controversial move last August threw around 2,000 international students, including around 350 Indians, in a state of limbo. The UKBA claimed that LMU was unable to keep a tab on bogus students who may have enrolled in order settle down in Britain.
University minister Mark Harper said he was now satisfied LMU had made the necessary improvements to its systems and administration. He said LMU will be on probation for a year "to build a track record of compliance", but that it can admit a restricted number international students again.
Home Affairs Select Committee Chairman Keith Vaz, said the UKBA's original decision was "a wrong choice," adding: "It was poorly handled and has irreparably damaged UK's reputation abroad."
