Democrat Jerry Brown on Tuesday won his bid to become California governor and will succeed Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, US media said citing exit polls.

Brown beat out his Republican opponent Meg Whitman, the billionaire former chief executive of eBay, to take the state by a margin of 49 to 46, CNN said.

Whitman had spent over 140 million dollars of her own fortune in the bid to take the governorship, according to media reports.
