Ethnic Indian academician CP Ramachandran has been bestowed Professor Emeritus status by Universiti Sains Malaysia for his contributions in the field of education, research and community service.

Ramachandran, 73, did pioneering work in research and control of filariasis -- a parasitic and infectious tropical disease.
"I feel very honoured for being bestowed the status and I thank USM Vice-Chancellor Tan Sri Professor Dzulkifli Abdul Razak and his team for giving me the recognition," New Straight Times quoted Ramanchandran as saying.
He worked as chief of filariasis research and control at the Institute for Medical Research before moving to then Universiti Pulau Pinang, now known as USM, as one of its pioneer academic staff.
In 1979, He joined the World Health Organisation in Geneva on secondment from USM.
He has been honoured by various institutions at home and abroad for his work.
