EU opens talks with Turkey in new areas

The European Union opened negotiations with Turkey in two further reform areas as part of Ankara's bid to join the 27-nation bloc on Wednesday, and said it hoped to open talks on 2-3 others in the first half of 2008.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said the opening of the so-called "chapters" on health and consumer protection and trans-European transport networks on Wednesday showed that accession talks were on track despite difficulties.
