The fire broke out yesterday night at the Sua Pa Plaza, trapping a number of residents who attempted to reach the building's roof for evacuation by helicopters, The Nation newspaper's Web site said. The blaze started on the first floor of the nine-story building and quickly spread.

The cause was not immediately known. The incident follows a New Year's Eve fire that killed at least 62 revelers at a jammed Bangkok nightclub, and the deaths of about 300 people in traffic accidents over the five-day holiday.
