The 50-year-old Madonna had almost finalised the 19-month long effort to adopt four-year-old Mercy James, but the child's grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa is now trying to prevent this, reports thesun.co.uk.

Chekechiwa said: "Why doesn't this singer pick other children? It is stealing. I want to go to court, I won't let her go."

The child lives in an orphanage in Malawi and Lucy says she was bombarded by officials concerning the adoption.

She said: "They told me when I visited her last month that they want to find a better education and home for Mercy. But I am sticking to the initial agreement that Mercy will return home to me after she reaches six."

Mercy was put in the orphanage when her 18-year-old mother died just five days after her birth. The child's father is supposedly a schoolboy who died of AIDS.
