At a function held in New York over the weekend, US Congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney also presented the same award to Pakistan's former envoy to the UN Abdullah Hussain Haroon.
The two former ambassadors were selected for the award by the National Advisory Council on South Asian Affairs, which is made up of people of South Asia origin.
Addressing the select gathering on the occasion, Ban spoke of the need to find a unified vision, with respect and friendship amongst nations, so humanity may better enjoy peace and prosperity.
