The incident took place on Monday. The province is close to the Iranian border, a military statement said.

The military gave no further details about the incident but said another soldier was wounded in the attack. He was sent to a coalition medical facility for treatment.

The latest casualties bring the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq to around 3,983 since the US-led invasion in 2003, according to a Pentagon estimate.
