Leaked cables from the US embassy in Beijing include a conversation in 2007 between Xi and the US ambassador. Xi, who was recently appointed vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission which controls the People’s Liberation Army, told the envoy he likes movies on World War II and hopes Hollywood will always make them. He enjoyed Saving Private Ryan.

Chinese officials rarely praise western culture. But Xi is said to have pointed out that Chinese moviemakers neglect promoting values, while the good usually prevails in American movies.
