The dead included the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief for Paghman district of Kabul, Tolo News reported.

Kabul police spokesperson Ebadullah Karimi said a suicide bomber crashed his explosives-laden car into the district police headquarters. He said the number of casualties is expected to rise.

Most of the injured are civilians, officials said.

Soon after the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and transferred the wounded to nearby medical facilities. Doctors described the condition of some of the injured as critical.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, 1TV News channel reported.
