Incessant rain had triggered the landslide on Sunday, causing mud flow which inundated a nearby Gaoyang Town Centre Primary School.

Rescue efforts were launched and the trapped people, including teachers and residents, were shifted to another school for shelter, Du Honghui, head of the Xingshan County's Land and Resource Bureau said.

Rainstorms of up to 141 mm in the past three days have killed two persons in Hubei, official Xinhua news agency reported.

Nearly 830,000 people in 16 counties or cities in Hubei have been affected by the storms, which have also caused flash floods in some areas.
