A magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit northern Japan on Tuesday, 67 miles (108 km) northeast of the east coast city of Sendai, the US Geological Survey reported.

It said the quake, only 29.5 miles (47.5 km) deep, struck at 1404 GMT.
