"I want to say to the French people that my health is fine," said the 54-year-old leader on the steps on the presidential palace after chairing a cabinet meeting.

Sarkozy was rushed to hospital on Sunday after collapsing while jogging on a hot summer day and was diagnosed as having fainted from overwork and dehydration.

"I have to get some rest," Sarkozy added and vowed to tell the French people if he is hospitalised.

The president, known for his fast-paced style, was discharged from a military hospital on Monday and spent the following day resting at a residence outside Paris and meeting with aides.

The cabinet meeting was the last before the government's summer break. At the weekend, Sarkozy will fly south for a three-week holiday at his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy's family villa on the Mediterranean.
