Paras Shah, 39, was arrested from Fulbari resort in Pokhara, where he had fled after getting into a gun brawl at Tiger Tops tourist resort in Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal on Sunday night.

Paras, the only son of the deposed king Gyanendra, in a statement issued on Monday admitted firing his gun in the air, but defended his action, saying he could not bear to hear insults against his family.

Though Nepal’s caretaker government had initially turned a blind eye to Paras’s shooting in Chitwan, it was, however, forced to take action following protests by Koirala’s Nepali Congress, the largest party in the ruling alliance, and the media outcry.

After a four-member police team was sent to the Chitwan resort to investigate, the home ministry said it had also formed a second probe panel headed by a deputy inspector-general of police.

This is for the first time that a member of the erstwhile royal family has been arrested after a country-wide warrant was issued against him for opening fire in the air.
