"We are considering asking for a retrial," Liu's lawyer Shang Baojun told AFP.

"Liu Xia (Liu Xiaobo's wife) wants to appeal for a retrial. We are still deciding which way to go about it. If we do it, of course our defence will be based on a plea of not guilty."

Liu was sentenced to 11 years in prison in December last year on subversion charges after co-authoring Charter 08, a bold manifesto calling for political change in communist-ruled China.

He was awarded the Peace Prize on Friday.
