As troops advance towards the last remaining Tamil Tiger stronghold of Mullaittivu, the army chief of the island nation had on Saturday said Prabhakaran may have fled the country.

However, defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella on Monday maintained that the rebel leader might be moving continuously from bunker to bunker to avoid capture.

The army will "flush out" Prabhakaran whether he is "dead or alive", Rambukwella told PTI.

Sri Lankan security forces have captured one of the command bunkers used by the Tamil Tiger supremo in thick forests of Dharmapuram town in Mullaittivu.

The bunker, being dubbed by the Lankan forces as a prize discovery, was camouflaged as an ordinary peasant hut, but had all the trappings of a command headquarters.

Built inside a civilian settlement, among the houses of the poor villagers, the bunker had a concrete bomb proof roofing and was fully air-conditioned.
