An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted New Ireland region of Papua New Guinea Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake occurred at 10.46 GMT, Xinhua reported.

The quake's epicentre was 771 km northeast of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and 167 km south of Taron, New Ireland, the most northeastern province of Papua New Guinea.
