After the images of a battered Rihanna were leaked to the press by an insider in the Los Angeles Police Department, an internal investigation has begun in LAPD to catch the culprit who sold the confidential photographs to the media.

"The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence. A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination," the LAPD said in a statement.

The police department has yet to publicly identify 20 year-old singer Rihanna as the alleged victim in the assault case and added that the photo appears to have been taken "during an official domestic violence investigation."

The statement also added that any person with information about how the photo leak can contact the department.

The photograph which first surfaced on TMZ.Com, is a closeup of a young woman's face. Her eyes are closed and she looks to have sustained various cuts and bruises to her forehead, lips and cheeks.
