The blast occurred on the main road to Balad Ruz, 85 kilometres (50 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital, a region where Al-Qaeda operatives remain active, a police official told AFP.

Diyala, in central Iraq, is considered one of the most dangerous areas of the country, where Al-Qaeda and various insurgent groups still manage to launch attacks despite a general decrease in violence levels elsewhere.
