The confirmation was made by the Senate yesterday after lawmakers approved Roemer's nomination by unanimous consent.

A former US lawmaker from Indiana and a member of the 9/11 Commission, 53-year-old Roemer is currently head of Washington-based think tank Center for National Policy (CNP).

Roemer had testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday, which confirmed his nomination the following day.

The Senate accelerated his nomination process so that he could be in New Delhi before Clinton's proposed visit to India.

The nomination of Roemer, who is expected to leave for New Delhi soon, as the US Ambassador to India was officially announced by the White House on May 28 and sent to the Senate on June 11.

Roemer is considered close to President Barack Obama and was among the first few Democrats to support his run for US Presidency.
